The G7 meeting brings the leaders of nine of the worlds major economies together has been underway in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, this time more than the usual list of crises are on the agenda during the three day summit. The war in the Ukraine is impacting many economic and humanitarian issues way beyond Europe and these are on top of Covid and the financial problems that are escalating rapidly through stock markets, the crypto world and most importantly – the real economy across the globe.
The global systems strongest supporters and advocates watching on must be concerned, while many institutions attempt to provide patches for justifying their purpose – they witness the irrelevance and ineffectiveness of their policies that underpinned globalism since WW2.
The alternatives however are much worse and the lack of make believe technological fixes present an even larger worry as Energy needs and Climate concerns are clearly going to clash head on in the immediate future. Some semblance of order in the geo political world is always helped when markets are stable and functioning well – this isn’t the case at the moment.
A major shift in political alliances and trade is taking place at the same time following decades of globalism, financial schemes, tech and digital promises, these good times may return, but clearly a large rotation from the technological and financial wizardry that shaped the ideas of current generations is changing – to a new focus based on commodities and security and sound finance, rather than trends and influencers and get rich quick schemes.
The task of the G7 leaders will be fully tested further in a few months when the G20 convenes with China and Russia at the enlarged table in Indonesia. This meeting will give us an idea of how the future alignment of nations is shaping – for the better or worse. As Boris Johnson has pointed out democracies must not succumb to Fatigue as the events shaping the changes are well in motion and are not going away.
It is of course critical to see how events will play out in the US with the midterm elections not far away and although there is strong support for the Ukraine throughout the American public, the nation remains divided on many issues making US leadership a national and global issue.
